Education

B.A. in philosophy and English from Syracuse University

Teaching gives me hope for the future of the world. I have been teaching and tutoring in diverse environments for over three years, and during that time I have continually been inspired by the students I work with, by their dedication and their curiosity, which keeps me coming back. When I teach, my goal is to help students accomplish their goals, but not just the immediate, easily quantifiable goals, like getting a certain grade on a paper. Rather, in accomplishing these immediate goals, I also aim to help students better themselves as people, so that, regardless of what they might face in their future, they will be in a position to succeed. The key to this, I believe, is effective communication.

At Syracuse University, I majored in philosophy and English and graduated summa cum laude. I was president of an organization that taught weekly spoken word poetry workshops, which helped students with their writing and public speaking abilities, and I also tutored ESL students. My specialties include but are not limited to: English and ELA assignments, ESL, writing for classes or standardized tests, and public speaking. I am able to consistently incorporate my experiences as a student into my teaching curriculum, as I make sure my students know why they are doing a certain task rather than merely what they are doing. The students I have worked with for the past three years have had a tremendous impact on my own life. I have published my creative work in national magazines, and I gave the senior address at my graduation. In developing as a writer and an activist, I am motivated by the dedication I have seen from my students.

I am a capable tutor in the previous subjects because of my command with the English language. I have studied rhetoric, and I am skilled in debate. With my patience and ability to make abstract ideas accessible, I am able to share my skills with my students.

To be a successful speaker you must have confidence and patience. I learned these skills during my time as a performance poet, as I opened for several top artists. I once performed a poem for over one-thousand people at the Martin Luther King Jr. Banquet in Syracuse's Carrier Dome. Through practice and fun exercises that I have used to improve my own abilities, I can help any student accomplish his or her public speaking goals.

I just moved to Cranston last week. My schedule is very flexible, and I am willing to travel to a convenient location for a tutoring session. I hope to hear from you soon.
