Education
I completed my PhD in early modern European history at Yale University (2013), and I earned a BA from Duke University (2007), where I doubled majored in history and French. At Duke, I graduated magna cum laude and with highest distinction, awarded for my honors thesis. I was also inducted into Phi Beta Kappa, a national honor society.
I am a homeschool instructor and academic, standardized test, and college preparation tutor.
I have homeschooled students in math (Algebra, Geometry, Algebra II, Precaclulus, and Statistics), English (8th-12th grade), Social Studies (American history (including AP) and American government (including AP). I understand the unique opportunities and challenges of homeschooling and look forward to developing a custom curriculum that fits the needs of your child.
I have extensive experience tutoring students from elementary school to graduate school in writing, research skills, history, French, math (basic to Trigonometry/Pre-Calculus Statistics), study skills, and standardized test preparation (SAT, ACT, SAT Subject Tests, ISEE, SSAT, GRE, AP, Regents, etc.). I have tutored 120+ students for 7000+ hours.
I am also experienced helping students write admissions essays for high school, college, and graduate school. My essays helped me earn admission to Duke and Yale, and I have won several fellowships for which essays were a major part of the application process, including a Fulbright grant from the United States Department of State for a year of research in France. I conduct admissions interviews for Duke University, and I am happy to help prepare students to ace their admissions interviews. I have helped students gain admission to many colleges including Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Oxford, Williams, Northwestern, Cornell, Georgetown, Johns Hopkins, Duke, Bowdoin, Hamilton, and many more.
I worked as a Teaching Fellow and Instructor at Yale University, where I taught undergraduate and graduate history classes. All of the courses I taught had large writing components, so I have extensive experience grading college-level papers. I have also worked as a writing tutor for Yale undergraduates.
I worked closely with international students, helping them with both language and American academic stylistics.
I earned a perfect score on the SAT II Writing (800), ACT English (36), and GRE Writing (6) standardized tests and a 780 out of 800 on the GRE math. I have worked for Kaplan, Inc. as an SAT teacher.
As a tutor, I strive to help the student with his or her specific task and, at the same time, to make sure that the student also develops his or her broader skills. A student who leaves a session with a better assignment but without learning how to apply his or her new skills to future work has not been well served.
