Education
Bachelor of Arts, Physics & Chemistry, Vassar College
Master of Science, Chemistry, Stony Brook University
I graduated from Vassar College in 1996 with a Bachelor's degree in Physics and Chemistry. I have a Master of Science degree from Stony Brook University in Chemistry.
I first tutored as a department intern in the Vassar Physics & Astronomy department in 1994 and began tutoring on my own immediately after graduation. I have been teaching college chemistry and physics for the past six and a half years. I have also taught middle school and high school math (including regents algebra and geometry courses) and high school science (including astronomy, AP Physics B and AP Chemistry.)
I have four boys of my own (including my two stepsons) ranging in age from 1 - 12. Raising my autistic five year old has increased my awareness, sensitivity and capability with various learning differences. My stepson's placement in the gifted program after several years struggling with ADHD strengthens my belief that any child can succeed if their special needs are thoughtfully addressed, and they are willing to rise to new challenges.
Having taught multiple AP science courses, as well as honors college courses, I know that even very bright students can benefit from one-on-one tutoring. The highest achieving students are often the first to fall behind due to full and chaotic schedules. Helping these students keep up on the fast track brings not just the obvious benefits of academic recognition, but can help prevent emotional breakdowns along the way, assuring that your child enjoys the luxury of being a child while (s)he can.
