Early in my public school teaching career, I realized that my elementary education program had not given me the tools to provide appropriate teaching for reading, especially to students with reading disabilities. My mentor told me that there was a way to reach these kids, and encouraged me to receive training in a multisensory approach to language arts instruction. For three years, I received intensive training in multisensory instruction for reading, writing, spelling, handwriting, and math while teaching in a private school for dyslexic children. I saw amazing success for students who were taught in a way they could learn. After that I did private tutoring and worked with home-schooled children while developing and opening a public charter school in Oregon. That school was based on multisensory approaches, to make this type of instruction more accessible. I have since moved to California's Central Valley and now provide private tutoring and home-schooling support in clients' homes.
