While a student at USC I participated in the Teaching International Relations Program (TIRP) and the La Curacao Academic Achievement Program (LCAAP), both of which allowed me to develop a curriculum and teach high school students. In these positions I was also able to use my Spanish with the mostly ESL student populations.
Additionally, I volunteered with Heart of Los Angeles (HOLA)—a non-profit that offers after school programs to students in downtown Los Angeles. While at HOLA I mentored a high school senior through the college application process, which included a significant amount of time brainstorming, outlining, drafting, reviewing and finalizing her personal statement.
At HOLA I also taught poetry and cooking courses. Through these courses I've learned how to develop a successful curriculum, how to work with ESL students, and how to work with various learning styles.
Most recently I've volunteered with Reading to Kids—a non-profit that organizes monthly reading clubs at various LAUSD elementary schools. With Reading to Kids I've worked with students from kindergarten through 6th grade on improving their reading skills, increasing their reading comprehension, and expanding their vocabulary.
Finally, I have also offered my skills to college students, and have seen significant improvement on their writing that has raised their grades. This has included everything from researching a topic, organizing an essay, developing a thesis, strengthening an argument, proofreading for syntax, and revising a paper.
It is with these teaching and mentoring experiences, the knowledge I've gained through my studies, and a sincere care for my students that I hope to help you reach your goals.
