If your child is always asking you how to spell words they have written countless times already, and if they have trouble writing their wonderful thoughts and ideas on paper, consider learning more about dyslexia.
Dyslexia is a specific learning disability based in the brain. People with dyslexia have a hard time recognizing words and are often poor spellers. They find it hard to sound out words, often even after being taught phonics. These problems are due to not being able to distinguish the basic sounds in language, called phonemes.
Dyslexic children experience these problems even though they are very bright, and are receiving classroom instruction that is effective for most children. Because of these challenges with reading, dyslexic children may not understand what they are reading. This can negatively affect their learning in many other areas.
Often, people suffer the consequences of dyslexia for years without knowing they have a learning disability. They have no idea why they struggle to read, write and spell, and that with proper teaching they can overcome those difficulties.
